The best scar treatment is prevention. While this may not be possible in the setting of trauma or infection, elective procedures require creation of a scar.  Surgical scars require careful planning and design, meticulous technique, and wound management. Such knowledge and skills form the basis of training for Specialist Plastic Surgeons like Dr Tolerton.

Despite optimal treatment, sometimes scars behave in abnormal ways. This may be due to delayed healing, infection or patient tendency to develop hypertrophic or keloid scars. These can be difficult to treat however a number of options are available.

A thorough review and optimisation of causative and/or risk factors for poor wound healing and scarring will be conducted by Dr Tolerton. Non-surgical treatment in the form of steroid injections can improve scar appearance and symptoms. Surgical revision of the scar may be recommended, the technique used dependent on the type, size and site of the scar. The same principles of careful design, meticulous technique and wound management apply to scar revision surgery.
